Craftsmanship isn't rocket science. But it's also not something you just wing on a Saturday afternoon after watching a ten-minute YouTube video. There's a reason some people build beautiful furniture while others end up with wobbly shelves held together by hope and too many screws.

I come from a craftsman background: My father was raised in a carpentry family, and I grew up absorbing the dos and don'ts of the trade over decades in his workshop. These are the hard-earned basics I return to every time I build. It comes down to four essential steps, that - if followed - will help you improve your crafting skills significantly, no matter what you are building: My personal Golden Path of Craftsmanship.

Step One: Plan First, Build Second

I know, I know. You're excited. You've got your materials, you've got energy, you've got a vague idea of what a bookshelf looks like. It's in our nature to jump on things and just get started. Please put the saw down, and read this first.

Good planning and preparation is genuinely half the work. Sit down, sketch a blueprint, figure out your dimensions, and list every material you'll need. Think about the end result - really think about it. Where do the joints go? What thickness do you need? Will this thing actually fit through the door when it's done?

Even if you're new to the game: There has never been a better time, of using the internet to get into all kinds of craftsmanships. You'll be surprised how many ways there are to uncloak a toilet or to sand your furniture.

This is the part, where the more thought you put in, the more you will save yourself time, money, and frustration down the line. During your planning, you will encouter the most problems, and can spot them from the comfort of your chair with a pencil or mouse in hand. That's a lot cheaper than spotting them after you've cut your expensive hardwood 2cm too short.

Step Two: The Right Tool for the Right Job

Using a flathead screwdriver as a chisel doesn't make you resourceful. It makes you the person with ugly joints and a destroyed screwdriver.

Every step in your build has a tool designed specifically for it. Use that tool. If you don't own it, borrow it, rent it, or buy it. What you shouldn't do is improvise and then wonder why your finished piece looks like it was build during an earthquake.

Good tools don't have to cost a fortune, but they do have to be the right ones. Your end result is only as good as what you used to get there.

Step Three: Clean Workshop, Clean Work

You've got your plan. You've got your tools. Now look around your workspace. Can you actually walk through it without performing an obstacle course? No? Fix that first.

A clean, organised workshop isn't some Feng Shui theory. You work faster when you know where everything is. You make fewer mistakes when your workbench isn't buried under offcuts and coffee cups. And when you get to finishing - painting, waxing, lacquering - dust and debris are your enemies. Nothing ruins a perfect finish quite like a workshop that looks like a sawmill exploded in it.

Keep it clean. Your future self will thank you.

Pro tip: No matter if you use a tablesaw or solder on a circuit board: Always make sure your workspace has good lighting.

Step Four: Safety. Seriously.

Here's where I stop being funny for a moment. Actually, no. Let me paint you a picture:

You're running your table saw. No blade guard because "it gets in the way". No push stick because "I'm careful". Your kid runs into the workshop laughing because they want to show you a drawing they made. You turn around, your hand slips, and now you're explaining to the ER doctor how you used to have ten fingers. Or worse: the kid reaches the blade.

Is that image uncomfortable? Good. Remember it every single time you set up your workspace. Nothing you craft is worth more than parts of your body, the people around you, or your own life.

Wear eye protection. Wear ear protection. Use push sticks. Keep blade guards on. Use a dust mask. Make sure people around you know when you're operating power tools. Check your equipment before every session.

None of this is optional, and none of it is overkill. Most tools are designed to cut, drill, or burn through hard materials, they will go through you without even noticing.
